How Do I Become A Christian?

You may have found this website through a search for something mom related and I'm glad you found it. I talk a lot about being a "Christian mom," a "believer in Jesus," and "following Christ," and this may be a foreign concept to you. If so, that is probably why you stumbled across this page.

I'd like to take a moment to explain what all of those things mean - my friend this is the gospel message. First, let me say that becoming a Christian is not as simple as saying a prayer, asking Jesus into your heart, or accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. I am guilty of using all of those terms. In fact, I may have even used a few of them on this website. It goes so much deeper than just saying we did something or that we believe in God.

First, to become a Christian, you must realize that all people are sinful (including you), and this separates you from God. Romans 3:23 says, ... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."  There is nothing you can do on your own to pay for your sins. God is holy, and if you've committed even one sin (a negative thought, a little white lie) then you are separated from God. The Bible tells us in Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (ESV).

Admit you are a sinner

Jesus Christ is God's only answer for your sin. It is through Jesus alone that you can know God personally and experience His forgiveness. He died in your place - Romans 5:8 says, "but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." He didn't just die for your sins; he rose from the grave!

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:3-6 "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received; that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep."

Secondly, to become a Christian, you must acknowledge that Jesus is the only way to God. He is the only way to pay the debt you owe, that you'll never in a million years be able to pay back on your own. There is no act of human will or good deed that can cover the cost. Only Jesus can.  "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me." John 14:6.

Believe that Jesus paid for your sins through His death, burial, and resurrection

Thirdly, to become a Christian you mut receive Christ!  John 1:12 says "Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, he gave the right to become children of God."

You might wonder -how do I do that?  This is done through faith. God's gift of salvation is through grace alone. It is not of yourself, so you are exercising faith when you receive Jesus. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no man can boast."

Receive Jesus Christ through faith

Finally, it is very important to know that when you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are turning to God from yourself. You will need to repent - ask forgiveness - for all of your sins and trust Jesus Christ to come into your life, to forgive you of your sins, and to make you what He wants you to be. It is one thing to agree in your mind that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for your sins. It is another to receive Christ by faith, as an act of your will.

Once you have received Jesus Christ, your life should change. True repentance means asking forgiveness from God and then turning away from your sins.

A life without truly receiving Jesus looks like yourself in the center and Jesus on the outside.

A life entrusted to Jesus Christ looks like Jesus in the center and your life is yielded to Him and what His word - the Bible says.

If you want to become a Christian, you can do it right now. You can read the scriptures from above in your Bible or download a free Bible app on your phone. This one https://www.studybible.org/ is my favorite - but you can choose whichever one you want.

You will want to pray and tell God you realize you are no good on your own - you are a sinner. You acknowledge that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross to pay for your sins. Accept this gift of grace through putting your faith in Jesus. Repent of your sin to God. Ask for his forgiveness and then begin your new life in Christ!

The best news is that even though the Christian life is hard, we are promised an eternity with Jesus! When we die, our bodies remain here on earth, but our souls will go on. When you become a Christ follower, you will be with Jesus forever when you die. If you do not choose Jesus, your soul will spend eternity in hell, apart from God. I pray that you choose Jesus!

1 John 5:11-13 "And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."

If you have decided to give your life to Jesus, I encourage you to begin looking for a Bible believing church. Get involved in the church and connect with other believers. This will help you turn from your previous habits and strengthen your walk with the Lord.

Growing in your relationship with Jesus will result from trusting him. Galatians 3:11 says "the righteous will live by faith." The more you trust God with every detail of your life, the more you will grow.
